Descriptions and Opinions

  • Every company you might be interested in has some kind of web presence and “careers” or “jobs” page. Companies are too numerous to list.

    Our Opinion

The best option when looking for a job, is to research and target companies where you would like to work. Visit their sites and apply directly (and learn more about the companies). Most companies use Workday or other similar tools that enable you to create a profile and receive alerts directly from the company for jobs that match your skills or search parameters. The quality of AI and matching varies by company. In conjunction with company job boards, you should ALWAYS leverage LinkedIn and figure out which of your connections is at the company where you have applied. Assuming you know them reasonably well, this is an opportunity to have some humility and ask for help.

  • Robert Half is a Professional Recruiting Firm that also now has an app with thousands of on-site, remote and hybrid job listings from the global companies they work with. They claim that many of the opportunities are exclusive to Robert Half – they are not a consolidator of listings from other sites. You can submit your resume, apply for contract or permanent positions, and subscribe to job alerts to stay updated on brand-new opportunities. Site enables you to upload a resume so employers can search for you. You can also connect directly with hiring managers.

    Our Opinion

Robert Half has been around forever and is well respected. As well as having a permanent search arm, they seem to still be best known for placing contract workers and staff augmentation. Staff are very professional and pleasant to work with, but they seem to have their roots in accounting and much of what they have to offer is in project management and accounting at mid-levels. This is a good place to start if you have easily marketable skills for contract work, because you never know when a temp to perm opportunity might come up. If you get onto their email list, you may also receive periodic emails with useful tips. There’s something to be said for a good, old fashioned brick and mortar business that has become web enabled.

    Our Opinion

CareerBuilder has been around for a while and is quite large, with a robust search function. It uses Google AI to help match job seekers with suitable opportunities and provides career advice and resources for job candidates. For employers, monthly subscription plans can aid in candidate searches with targeted recruitment emails, candidate management tools and more. Job postings redirect candidates to company job sites to apply.

  • Indeed aggregates postings from across the web — including from company career pages and professional associations. Robust search function that enables local and global searches. Claims to host more 150 million resumes and claims that 10 new jobs are added to its site every second globally. Free resources for job seekers include a resume builder tool and career blog.

    Our Opinion

Indeed has been around since 2004. The site aggregates listings from websites, job boards, staffing firms, associations, and company career pages. They primarily cater to companies selling premium job posting and resume features. They only began allowing job seekers to apply directly in 2011. So, we look at this as sort of a cookie-cutter job, one-size fits all site, and not necessarily a good one for targeted jobs at upper echelons. If you are looking to be a teacher, cook, mid-tier project manager, or administrative assistant this could be a good site.

  • This top networking site allows you to find jobs not only through direct employer listings but also through communication with your extended network. Your profile serves as your resume, and you can easily find and share career-related content, dive deep into thought leadership posts from prominent people in your field and solicit or supply recommendations. Additionally, industry groups allow you to participate in professional discussions and follow companies you find interesting — and relevant to your job search. Premium paid features offer more advanced search functions and services.

    Our Opinion

As a social networking site, LinkedIn offers some benefits that other sites don’t have, not the least of which is the ability to identify contacts who work at companies you might be pursuing. In addition, company employees or hiring managers often directly post jobs to their pages. The postings typically redirect to the organization’s website. There are no hidden fees for this. In addition, with a good profile, headhunters and recruiters also proactively search for candidates, so a job seeker may show up in a search based on keywords in a LinkedIn profile. Finally, with a “Premium” membership, job seekers can see who has viewed their profile, and can set up a variety of job search parameters to receive frequent updates. Additionally, this feature indicates whether the candidate is in the top 10% or 25% of job seekers.

    Hidden Costs

Premium membership costs approximately $29.99/month, or a discounted rate when paid annually.

  • This large site offers weekly job alerts, job search advice, a resume builder and, of course, job postings. This job search website also allows you to upload your resume for hiring managers and recruiters to find in their searches. The site uses AI and blockchain technology to connect job seekers and companies through a fully automated process.

    Our Opinion

This site appears to consolidate posts from several other sites. The user interface is very basic, and the job descriptions are hard to read. When you choose to Apply, you will be directed to a different job board, and required to sign in with your email address, more than likely resulting in a dozen other job sites you never wanted to use sending job postings directly to your inbox. Use with care.

    Our Opinion

Site appears to have several senior level postings. However, it seems to feed up enticing job postings but, when you attempt to read the description, you will be prompted to pay up: (49.97/month for 1 month, $32.97/month for 3 months, $29.97/month for 6 months, $24.97/month for 12 months.

  • Glassdoor lets you search for jobs and allows people to review companies they’ve worked for and share salary and benefits info, giving insight that job seekers wouldn’t otherwise have. Professionals who have interviewed with a company can also give details on the business’s recruiting processes. While all this information should be taken with a grain of salt, it can be quite revealing. On the hiring side, Glassdoor allows employers to identify job candidates and market their companies to job seekers.

    Our Opinion

This site is the “go to” for reviews on companies from employees and job seekers, who provide detail on salary, culture, leadership, and the interview process. In some cases, people detail some of the interview questions you might expect. Read with a grain of salt as some reviews may be from disgruntled former employees or people who interviewed but weren’t hired. However, if you are interviewing or targeting a company, there can be useful insight here. Companies may also post jobs and search for candidates based on their profiles.

Most job postings route candidates directly to the company job sites to apply, though there is an “Easy Apply” feature on some postings.

Occasionally, Glassdoor will require you to submit a review of a company, or prior salary to continue accessing information on the site. The goal is a give and take, but this is also how they obtain the reviews that people find so useful.

  • Google for Jobs aggregates job listings from sites across the web, including several of the ones listed in this post. Use it just like you use Google, and from the same main search page. Search for key phrases like “accounting jobs” to get a list of available positions. Results also show company ratings and salary info for the position, if available. If something catches your eye, click a button that reads, for example, “Apply on LinkedIn” to go directly to the source of the job listing and apply. One key benefit of Google for Jobs is that it eliminates redundant results and displays only one listing for each open position.

    Our Opinion

Searching for jobs using google has many benefits, not the least of which is the fact that there is no requirement to join, upgrade, or pay fees to see job listings. It’s as easy as any job search. Google charges businesses (job posters) for SEO (Search Engine Optimization), so that a company’s postings will rise to the top of the search list. Most jobs you find will redirect to company job sites or to any number of job boards.

    Hidden Costs

No charge to job seekers; charges to companies for use of SEO functionality.

  • This site positions itself as an “online career and recruitment marketplace,” posting jobs for executive level job seekers, starting at $100,000. Headquartered in Munich, Germany, they offer job listings throughout the US and Germany

    Our Opinion

While several executive level, high-paid jobs are listed, the only way to see full job detail is to “upgrade” for $39.95/month for 1 month; $34.95/month for 3 months, or $29.95/month for 6 months. If you see an interesting job listed, and try to click through for more detail, you are likely to get a pop-up that says, “This executive job is visible to Premium Members only.”  Some of the listings available to view without a membership do include company names, or title and location, so job seekers can visit other sites like LinkedIn, or company websites, for full job detail.
